Carole Lacey explores skin solutions to treat maskne - breakouts, skin irritation and sensitivity caused by wearing a mask.
For those that are having to wear a mask day in and day out are increasingly having to deal with daily breakouts which include clogged pores, blemishes, inflammation, sensitivity and irritation. As we breath in and out we are creating a moist, warm environment with no air circulating. So what is happening underneath the mask and how can ZO skincare help?
In a healthy skin the oil gland is tiny and produces normal amounts of oil that travels up the hair follicle and migrates onto the skin where we wash it away. Any excess of trapped oil exacerbates chronic inflammation inducing an immunogenic response. The pores become clogged leading to acne. On the surface layer sits our makeup, oil, left-over sunscreen, fake tan, pollution and debris so without an effective cleansing routine it is near impossible for topical ingredients to penetrate the skin.
Follow these Cleansing Tips
- Cleanse morning and night – do not go to bed with the day on your face!
- Wash your mask after each use to avoid a build up of oil, dirt and makeup
- Make sure the mask material is breathable and fits properly otherwise the friction of movement can irritate the skin
- Avoid too much makeup or wear a makeup that is non-comedogenic
- Avoid squeezing and picking to reduce scarring and post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation
Acne is preventable if we address it in the early stages with a good skin care plan. Getting Skin Ready (GSR) prevents acne whilst at the same time improving overall skin health. Dr Obagi says this is the most important step: cleanse to remove excess oil, restore PH and enhance product penetration.
Take a look at the following products which compliment your GSR routine and target specific skin issues.
